Just Had a Tooth Extraction? Quick Aftercare Guide!
Having a tooth removed can feel daunting, but with the right aftercare, healing is usually straightforward and comfortable. Here is your quick guide to recovery after a tooth extraction at Whitehouse Dental Services.
First 24 Hours:
- Bite firmly on the gauze pad for 30–45 minutes to help a blood clot form
- Do NOT rinse, spit, or use a straw — this can dislodge the clot and cause a dry socket
- Avoid hot foods and drinks — stick to cool, soft foods like yoghurt, smoothies, and mashed potato
- Do NOT smoke or drink alcohol
- Rest and avoid strenuous exercise
- Apply an ice pack to the outside of your cheek (20 minutes on, 20 minutes off) to reduce swelling
- Take pain relief as directed — usually paracetamol or ibuprofen
- Sleep with your head slightly elevated
Days 2–7:
- Gently rinse with warm salt water (half teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water) after meals — do NOT swish vigorously
- Continue eating soft foods and gradually return to your normal diet as comfort allows
- Brush your teeth gently, avoiding the extraction site for the first few days
- Swelling and mild bruising may peak at day 2–3 and then gradually improve
- Some oozing and slight discomfort is normal — this should steadily decrease
When to Call Immediately — Whitehouse Dental Services or Emergency Department:
- Excessive or uncontrollable bleeding that does not stop with firm pressure
- Severe pain that is not relieved by pain medication
- Swelling that worsens significantly after 48 hours
- Fever, chills, or signs of infection (pus, foul taste)
- Numbness that persists beyond 24 hours
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
