Wisdom Tooth Extraction: Everything You Need to Know

Wisdom Tooth Extraction: Everything You Need to Know

Wisdom teeth often emerge in the late teens or early twenties. When there isn't enough room, they can become "impacted," leading to pain, infection, or damage to nearby teeth.

Signs You Might Need Extraction:

  • Persistent pain at the back of the jaw.
  • Swollen or bleeding gums.
  • Crowding of existing teeth.
  • Difficulty opening your mouth.

At Whitehouse Dental Services, we perform wisdom tooth removals using precision techniques to minimise trauma and speed up healing. We offer various sedation options to ensure the procedure is entirely stress-free.

Just Had a Tooth Extraction? Quick Aftercare Guide!

Aftercare: Ensuring a Smooth Recovery

Proper care at home is essential to prevent complications like Dry Socket (where the blood clot is lost too early).

The First 24 Hours:

  • Bite Firmly: Keep the gauze in place for 30–60 minutes after leaving the office.
  • Rest: Avoid strenuous physical activity.
  • No Straws or Spitting: The suction can dislodge the blood clot. Drink directly from a cup.
  • Cold Compresses: Apply an ice pack to your cheek in 20-minute intervals to reduce swelling.

Days 2–7:

  • Salt Water Rinses: Starting 24 hours after surgery, gently rinse with warm salt water (1/2 teaspoon of salt in a cup of water) after meals.
  • Eat Soft Foods: Stick to yogurt, mashed potatoes, or lukewarm soup. Avoid crunchy, spicy, or very hot foods.
  • Don't Smoke: Tobacco use significantly slows healing and increases the risk of infection.

When to Call Immediately — Whitehouse Dental Services or Emergency Department:

If you experience severe pain that medication won't fix, heavy bleeding that won't stop, or a high fever.
